A ball valve is a quarter-turn on/off valve with a rotational motion hollow ball-shaped disk that controls the flow of fluid.
Ball valves are referred to as quarter-turn valves because the ball rotates 90 degrees between the fully open and fully closed positions. A floating ball valve features a ball, a valve, and a stem. The stem is connected to a slot at the top of the ball which allows the ball to rotate a quarter turn (90 degrees). The ball is free to float inside the valve body. The ball is held in the position by the compression of the two elastomeric seats against the ball.
Once pressure is applied, the flow will push the ball against the seat creating a bubble-tight seal. This type of valve design is capable of bi-directional shut-off. The floating valve is very difficult to operate when upstream pressure is high.
In a house, a float valve is installed in a water storage tank and flush tanks, so that water flow is stopped automatically once the tank is filled up with water.
• Forged Steel Ball Valve
A forged steel ball valve is a common type of valve used to control and regulate fluid flow. As the name suggests, it is a ball valve made out of forged steel.
A ball valve is opened and closed by rotating the lever handle clockwise and counterclockwise, respectively. When the ball hole is parallel to the fluid flow, the valve is said to be open, and when the ball hole is rotated at 90 degrees, the valve is said to be closed.
A short shaft like an extension called Trunnion is set in the body. The trunnion-mounted ball valve design features a trunnion anchoring at the top and bottom of the ball. The ball is supported by two floating or spring-loaded seats that remain in constant contact with the ball.
